Year 6 Gymastics at Quay Side

Year 6 children have had a fantastic half term at Quay Side Gymnastics in Bridgwater.

At Wilowdown, we are committed to offering pupils a wide range of sporting activities and new experiences. Pupils have enjoyed high-quality gymnastics and trampolining sessions, delivered by qualified instructors, who can break down technical movements to help pupils achieve success. In addition, teachers had the opportunity to engage inhigh-quality CPD that will inform gymnastics teaching in the future. The increase in confidence we have seen in the children is fantastic and we hope that the experience they have had motivates them to continue engaging in physical activity and specifically gymnastics and trampolining. Whilst at Quay Side one week, year 6 were fortunate enough to meet an Olympian - Laura Gallagher. Laura represented GB in the most recent games in Tokyo and the children asked her questions about her experience. They were lucky enough to be coached by her as well - what an experience!

Willowdown v Puriton - 07.10.21

After what seems like an eternity, we took part in our first sports fixture since the pandemic. The fantastic five pictured above put in a massive shift against Puriton Primary School. They showed great teamwork, commitment and determination and they worked hard, taking the an early lead against a strong team. The game finished 3-3, after Puriton bagged a late equaliser. They played some fantastic football and did the school and themselves proud. Thank you to the parents, who came and supported. Our next fixture is against Puriton at Willowdown on Thursday 14th October.

Football v Puriton - 11.12.19

On Wednesday evening, a group of year 6s went to Puriton Primary School to compete in a football match. The game was played in good spirit with both teams working hard for each other, playing some great football at the same time. Puriton started well with a couple of early goals but we worked our way back into it with a few fantastic goals. Puriton proved to be too strong in the end, edging us out 11-8. The children represented the school in a positive way and they should be really proud of themselves. Well done guys!

Bikeability- 26/27.11.19

On Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th November, a number of Year 6 pupils took part in the Bikeability Course, delivered by Somerset Road Safety. The course involved the children completing a number of technical skills and road safety theory lessons, before venturing out on the road. Whilst on the road, pupils learned how to complete a number of maneuvers safely, including a U-turn and entering and exiting a junction. The children listened well and responded to the instructors positively, which enabled them to make good progress. Well done guys!

Indoor Athletics - 21.11.19

On Thursday 21st November, a team of year 6 athletes made their way to Blake School to compete in an indoor athletics event against a number of other local schools. There were 14 events in total and the children were fantastic. They encouraged each other throughout, represented the school in a positive way and competed well in the events, which resulted in a fifth place finish. Some of the events included were the 4 x 1 lap relay, chest push, standing long, vertical jump and many more. It was a fantastic event and as a school, we are really proud of the children and their efforts.

Triathlon - 16.10.19

On Wednesday 16th October, the whole school took part in a fundraising triathlon, which consisted of a run, a jump and a dance. The children encouraged each other positively and pushed themselves to do as much as possible, whilst having fun with their peers. There was a fantastic atmosphere around the school and lots of money was raised, which will be used to support learning opportunities in each of the classes.
