PE and Sport
PE and Sport at Willowdown 2021-22
At Willowdown, we ensure the high-quality delivery and consistent teaching of PE, as well as increased opportunities for physical activity. It is our aim to provide a variety of opportunities for physical activity through an engaging extra-curricular offer, which include a range of physical activity opportunities throughout the school day. In addition this year, we are going to be providing a range of competitive opportunities that allow pupils to develop their teamwork, leadership and social skills, whilst understanding the importance of how to compete in the right way.
As part of our PSHE curriculum, pupils learn about the importance of physical and mental health, as well as nutrition and sleep. As a school, we believe that this understanding combined with regular, purposeful physical activity will enable our pupils to become healthy and confident individuals, who will make sensible lifestyle choices and continue to engage in physical activity.
Government PE & Sport Funding
The government has provided additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
Sports Grant 2021-22
This year, Willowdown Primary has been allocated a Sports Grant. This funding has to be spent effectively and to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of. We plan to use this funding:
To increase the engagement of pupils in active play and physical activity.
To raise the profile of PE/Sports across the school community in order to encourage more pupils to make more active lifestyle choices.
Through effective CPD by professional coaches, develop teachers’ confidence and skills for delivering high quality PE lessons.
To provide a wide range of sports opportunities outside PE lessons.
To increase the motivation and team spirit through healthy competition.
For example, we will be:
- Employing Specialist PE Coaches to work alongside teachers in lessons to increase their subject knowledge and confidence in specific areas of PE, whilst delivering high quality PE lessons to children.
- Purchasing high-quality PE equipment to support lessons and extra-curricular opportunities.
- Provide opportunities for children to experience and access a wide range of physical activities across the academy, leading to some children being encouraged to take up sports outside of school as well.
